SANDSTONE SOCCER TEAM
THE 1910 STATE CHAMPION SOCCER TEAM from sandstone defeated a highly rated Minneapolis team by a score of 2-1. The pine county courier reported: The Sandstone soccer foot ball team now claims to be the champions of the state, as they have met the best players in the state and have defeated them all. The Minneapolis team which played here on the fourth of July was picked from a different teams in Minneapolis. They were confident of success and made their brags that they would make short work for farmer boy’s team at sandstone. They saw their mistake before the game had progressed very far and by hard and rough playing were able to make the first score, but it was the only time they had a chance as the ball was in their own territory most of the time. The Sandstone boy’s played good ball and with excellent team work and fine kicking were able to score twice on their heavier opponents, who acknowledged that they were fairly defeated. Sandstone’s players were (first row) Bill Mason, Bob Thompson, Sam Dimmock, John Bunney, Rev. William Middlemass; (second row) Dick Barlow,William Vesty, JimThompson; (third row) Bob Dimmock, Joe Hallman, Bob Percy, Arthur Martin and Alex Kelly
